Spain: harvest poised to expand
Cotton areas in Andalucía were unaffected by the intense rainfall that recently caused flooding in south eastern parts of the country. As a result, the final stages of crop development have proceeded without impediment. Picking of raingrown cotton in Cádiz province has already begun and ginning will shortly be under way. The harvest will expand over the coming weeks in irrigated fields, which make up about 90 percent of the total area. Plants are showing heavy fruit loads and yield expectations are high. The prospects for quality are also viewed with optimism. Favourable conditions are in place for the harvest and, barring unforeseen setbacks, progress should be rapid.
