Pakistan: cotton production estimates maintained
Cotton harvesting is virtually complete across most of the cotton-growing belt as growers have progressed with winter wheat planting. Growers have remained keen to pick as much as seed cotton as possible as prices have continued to move higher. The latest PCGA arrivals report has been encouraging, as arrivals during the first fortnight of December have been well above the same time frame, last year. However, most private production estimates have been maintained between 11.00 and 11.50 million bales of local weight.
Arrivals to cotton stations have continued at a modest pace and several hundred ginning factories have continued to operate on a partial basis. With cotton prices moving up during last week, seed cotton prices have also moved higher and supplies are held in very tight hands. Seed cotton prices have been quoted between Rs. 2,900 and Rs. 3,600 per 40 kilos, depending on the quality.
