Severe weather reported in Southeast US
Severe weather developed in parts of the Southeast overnight, with damaging winds, hail and brief, heavy downpours reported from northern Georgia into the Carolinas. Soils are saturated, and groundwater table levels are improving in drought-stricken areas. Spring field preparations, though, will be at a standstill for several days. Partly cloudy skies are forecast today, and cooler temperatures are expected tomorrow, which will slow the drying process.
Scattered thunderstorms were reported in the Memphis Territory yesterday, producing light rain and hail in isolated locales. Early morning precipitation was received in northern areas, and partly cloudy, more seasonable temperatures are expected today, with highs in the 60°s and low 70°s (F). A warming trend is forecast tomorrow, which will help rain-sodden soils dry.
Storms moved through California last night, bringing showers, hail and gusty winds to the San Joaquin Valley. Partly cloudy skies persist today, and a 40 to 80 percent chance of thunderstorms is forecast. Planters, therefore, are idle. Sunny, warmer conditions will return tomorrow, which will help soft soils firm. Light snow was received in the Sierra Nevada Mountains overnight, enhancing the winter snowpack.
Dry, cooler temperatures are forecast for West Texas today and winds are expected to increase this evening, possibly gusting to as many as 40 mph. Precipitation is needed to help reduce soil moisture evaporation rates. A 50 to 80 percent chance of thunderstorms is forecast tomorrow as a cool front enters the region. Severe weather could develop, with hail, damaging winds and light rain possible.
Meanwhile, planting is expanding in South Texas under favorable conditions. Sunny, breezy weather will linger through tomorrow, with daytime highs in the 80°s (F).
