India receives welcome rainfall

Scattered rain of moderate intensity has been reported in the Northern Zone, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka over the weekend. Skies over cotton producing regions are cloudy and the moisture has been beneficial to sowing and plant development. The latest rainfall is timely, and appears to have allayed fears that a lull in monsoon activity would undermine the prevailing mood of optimism with regard to the production outlook.

Nationwide, cumulative rainfall since the beginning of June is 21 percent in excess of the long period average, according to the Meteorological Department. A warning of heavy precipitation has been issued for Northern Zone states, coastal Maharashtra, Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh, in the next 72 hours.
